In a heartbreaking tragedy that has rocked the San Jose community, a man and a woman were shot and killed late last night in the parking lot of Westfield Valley Fair Mall, one of the Bay Area’s most popular shopping destinations.
The victims, identified as 28-year-old Michael Rivera and 26-year-old Sophia Lopez, both lifelong San Jose residents, were leaving the mall after a casual evening of shopping and dinner when the shooting occurred around 9:45 p.m. on February 23, 2026.
Witnesses told police they heard multiple gunshots and saw a suspect flee the scene in a dark-colored sedan. First responders arrived within minutes but were unable to save the couple. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
San Jose Police Department spokesperson Lt. Maria Gonzalez confirmed early this morning that the shooting appears to be a targeted attack. “We are treating this as a homicide investigation,” she said. “The victims knew each other and there is no indication this was random violence.”
The couple had been together for four years and were planning to get married later this year. Friends described them as “the kindest people you could ever meet” who were always helping others in their neighborhood.
